We can only do this when matrices have the same dimensions, that is, the number of rows and columns are the same. Then, we add or subtract the corresponding elements together. In order to multiply a matrix by a scalar, or number, we simply multiply each element in the matrix by the same fixed number. Understanding how to add matrices or subtract matrices and multiply matrices is important to be able to use a matrix to solve more complex problems. We can use matrices to solve systems of linear equations among other uses.
